Sedge ID 2024

Who should attend: Anyone who wants to improve their sedge identification knowledge and/or skills; including naturalists, plant enthusiasts, field biologists, and ecologists!

Class Description: During this two-day course, experts in the field of botany, Dr. Tyler Bassett (Michigan Natural Features Inventory) and Bradford Slaughter (Orbis Environmental Consulting) will be your guides to the wonderful, subtle beauty of sedges and rushes.

Explore field sites within Kalamazoo and Barry Counties for an up-close look at species while learning from Bassett and Slaughter how to distinguish among similar families and the identification of “hard-to-identify” species found in southwest Michigan. You will also have the opportunity to examine specimens in a laboratory setting.
