Irrigation use has greatly increased during the past 10 years and growers of all crops have found it to be an important aspect in risk management. The ability to apply water during times of inadequate rainfall helps growers maintain quality and yields, helping keep them economically viable in the current agricultural economy. To assist current and future irrigators, Michigan State University Extension is planning several day-long irrigation workshops across the state of Michigan in 2014. Workshops will provide information relevant to all irrigators, including growers of field crops, fruits, vegetables, and ornamentals.

The all day programs will start out with a general morning session followed by afternoon breakout sessions. Morning presentations will provide information on topics all irrigators need to know such as the rights, responsibilities and requirements of large volume water users, the importance of soil and water relationships, and best management practices for irrigators. There will also be an emphasis on the hows and whys of irrigation scheduling and the various tools available to growers to help them make irrigation decisions. In the afternoon, growers can choose to attend sessions that vary depending on the site selected. Both sessions will emphasize design, use and maintenance of the respective systems and irrigators of all crops are encouraged to attend.

To learn more about the workshops, please visit the MSU Biosystems & Agricultural Engineering water website. Information about the irrigation workshops is located under news/events.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., with the program starting at 9:00 a.m. The full day programs will conclude at 3:30 p.m. and will include lunch. Unless indicated below, the registration fee for each location is $50 per person. Registration is required at all locations regardless of the cost, as space is limited. The Dundee, Frankenmuth and Grand Rapids locations will conclude at 5:00 pm, and the registration fee will increase to $75 after March 10, and on-site.

The emphasis of these workshops is to help producers get optimum yields and maintain efficient water use from their irrigation systems. RUP and CCA credits will be available.
