July 17-18, 2019Are you among the “next generation” on your family’s commercial vegetable farm? Relationships with others in the veggie industry and Extension are critical capital you can rely upon to tackle common challenges and create new opportunities. This summer tour is designed to provide a chance to expand horizons and see how different, multi-generation farms are producing vegetables in west Michigan. It will also provide an opportunity to connect with other growers on the tour. Extension personnel are encouraged to attend to build relationships with growers in the Great Lakes region.
July 17: Keeping soils healthy is part of keeping the farm productive into the future. Day 1 will focus on soil health, and include a tour of Morgan’s Compost facility and a major potato grower who is part of a regional soil health initiative.
July 18: Michigan is home to a long history of vegetable production on muck soils, but soils and markets are always changing. Day 2 will feature an area of intensive veggie production with unique marl, muck soils. Onion production continues to be important on Michigan muck. Farms have also developed markets for root crops like parsnips, turnips, and beets as well as potatoes.
Group transportation will be provided by charter bus. Attendees may elect to board at two locations in Ontario, Canada or in Sears, Mich. Attendees will indicate their preferred boarding location during the registration process.
The tour includes lunch and dinner on July 17; breakfast and lunch on July 18; as well as one night of lodging (double-occupancy).
