The information taught in Stress Less with Mindfulness will provide social workers the tools to counsel and teach individuals struggling with managing stress in a constructive manner. Many individuals are seeking out stress management and social workers are often on the front lines to meet this request. This workshop will provide five Social Work Continuing Education Units certified by the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative.
Stress Less with Mindfulness is a program authored by West Virginia University Extension. It provides participants with an introduction to the experience and practice of mindfulness to reduce stress. Mindfulness can be defined as paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment and nonjudgmentally. Research has shown that mindfulness is effective in reducing stress related symptoms such as worry, physical tension and can be helpful in managing other chronic diseases.
Stress Less with Mindfulness is designed to actively engage adult learners in a group setting to increase knowledge and skills around stress management and give them constructive ways to deal with stress. Aspects of promoting social-emotional health are woven throughout the training and include handling stress through mindful breathing, moving, and thinking. By learning to be more empathetic and kind to ourselves and our own thoughts it helps us to be more empathetic and kind to others thus promoting more supportive and healthy relationships.
Five lessons include:
- Introduction to Mindfulness
- Mindful Eating
- Mindful Walking and Thought Surfing
- Be Kind to Your Mind
- Laughter is Good Medicine
