Honey Bee Medicine Clinics for Veterinary Practitioners
Michigan State University (MSU) invites veterinarians, veterinary students, and veterinary technicians to attend an in-hive honey bee medicine clinic and/or a laboratory honey bee diagnostic clinic.
Registration is required. These events are only for adults (18 years or older).
Registration is free.
MSU will provide participants with a certificate of attendance that veterinarians in Michigan can submit for continuing education credits from Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).
These events are subject to change or cancellation due to weather or other circumstances.
In-Hive Honey Bee Medicine Clinics
The in-hive clinics listed below will cover hive handling, colony inspections, and field diagnostics. Due to limited space, participants should not register for more than one in-hive clinic in 2025. Veterinary practitioners are welcome to register regardless of whether they attended a clinic in 2023 or 2024.
Expectations for in-hive clinics
- Participants are encouraged to arrive with their own protective gear/clothing. MSU will have veiled beekeeping jackets (sizes M and XXL) for participants to borrow, but protection from stings is not guaranteed. Honey bees can sting through clothing, including denim. Loose pants and closed toed shoes usually provide better protection than shorts, leggings, and sandals.
- Participants should not bring any other beekeeping equipment besides a beekeeping veil or suit due to biosecurity concerns. Previously used leather gloves will not be permitted.
- All participants are expected to understand that there is a risk of being stung.
Laboratory Honey Bee Medicine Diagnostic Clinic
The laboratory diagnostic clinic will cover microscopic diagnostics for honey bee diseases. Participants may register for the laboratory diagnostic clinic in addition to an in-hive clinic, however, participation in an in-hive clinic is not required to register for the laboratory diagnostic clinic.
Saturday, August 16, 1- 4 p.m. at MSU Veterinary Medical Center, 784 Wilson Rd, Room G-200, East Lansing, MI 48824
