Exclusive to Inclusive: Planning and Zoning Tools for Equity

Thursday, August 15th, 2024
6:30 - 8:00 PM

via Zoom

Since its creation, zoning has been used to create separation – separation of land uses, separation of activities, separation of individuals. This separation has had many benefits for communities, including public health, economic development, and environmental protection, but it has also resulted in patterns of development that exclude some uses and individuals from areas of our communities. Today, many Michigan communities are more racially and economically segregated than at any point in their history. This 1.5-hour webinar for elected and appointed officials, land-use decision makers, and interested residents will explore this history of zoning as a tool for exclusion and introduce tools for creating more inclusive planning and zoning in the future.

The webinar will cover:

  • History of zoning, and other policies, as a tool of exclusion
  • The current state of housing availability and affordability
  • Tools for communities to work toward more equitable planning and zoning

This program is made possible by a partnership between MSU Extension and the Region J Housing Partnership. Registrantss will receive a copy of the program materials and a recording of the webinar. Zoom information will be emailed to all registrants the week of the program.

Cost: This training is being provided free to participants thanks to the partnership with the Region J Housing Partnership.
