About the Spectacular Youth Leadership Institute:

The Michigan 4-H Spectacular Youth Leadership Institute (SYLI) is a lively celebration of the power of young people as leaders! Participants in this exciting, energetic, interactive Institute will participate in small and large group sessions to share and develop valuable knowledge and skills related to youth leadership, community engagement, and global citizenship. The Institute is open to current and aspiring teen leaders ages 13 and older (by Jan. 1, 2023), who seek to develop skills to serve in leadership roles in clubs, schools, communities, the state and the world. Attending the 2022 SYLI will help teens become outstanding leaders who approach life with their head, heart and hands open to new ideas, interesting people, and diverse cultures and perspectives. 

The objectives of the SYLU are for participants to:

  •     Develop skills and knowledge as youth leaders and global citizens
  •     Provide teens with tools to start a citizenship, leadership and service projects in their community (or build on and enhance existing programs and activities)
  •     Meet and share ideas with other teens, adult leaders, and MSU staff
  •     Build skills for supporting and promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice through their leadership efforts
  •     Have fun!!
Additional details regarding the SYLI at our East Lansing location
The registration fee ($125.00) for the SYLI at our East Lansing location includes meals, group transportation, admission to the MSU Men's Hockey Game on December 3, and overnight hotel lodging for the evening of Saturday, December 3 at the Spring Hill Suites Hotel, located at 1100 Trowbridge Rd, East Lansing, MI 48823. Optional hotel lodging at the Spring Hill Suites Hotel is available (for an additional fee) for the evening of Friday, December 2 for participants, adult volunteers, and staff who will be traveling for more than 2 hours to attend the event. Youth participants may request up to 2 roommates, and will be assigned to a hotel room shared with other youth following MSU Extensions Overnight Housing Policies.

All youth who participate in the SYLI at our East Lansing location must have an adult chaperone who is either a Gold Level MSU Extension volunteer or a MSU Extension staff member. Youth who do not identify an adult chaperone on their registration will have a MSU Extension staff member assigned as their chaperone for the event. 

On-site check-in for participants attending the SYLI at our East Lansing location will be held from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 3, 2022, at the Spring Hill Suites Hotel. The Institute will begin at 10 a.m in Wells Hall on the campus of Michigan State University. Group transportation for all participants from Spring Hill Suites to Wells Hall will be provided by MSU staff members using MSU owned vehicles. Participants will be guided and transported in groups by staff and adult volunteers to meals and various campus locations throughout the duration of the SYLI. 

The SYLI will conclude on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2022, at 1 p.m. at Wells Hall (619 Red Cedar Rd, East Lansing, MI 48824). Arrangements should be made by parents/guardians to pick up youth participants from Wells Hall by no later than 1:30 p.m. 

Schedule overview for East Lansing:
  • Saturday, December 3
    • 8:30 - 9:30 a.m.: On-site registration/check-in - Spring Hill Suites Hotel, East Lansing, MI
      • transportation for participants from the hotel to campus will be provided
    • 10 - 11:05 a.m.: Opening Session, Team Building Activity, Keynote Presentation (Wells Hall)
    • 11:10 a.m. - 12:10 p.m.: Youth Leadership Breakout Session #1 (Wells Hall)
      • Participants will be contacted via email with options and select their Breakout Session choice prior to the start of the Institute
    • 12:10 - 1:30 p.m.: Lunch at South Pointe Cafeteria (Case Hall)
    • 1:30 - 2:15 p.m.:  Youth Leadership Breakout Session #2 (Wells Hall)
    • 2:25 - 3 p.m.: Full Group Activity (Wells Hall)
    • 3:15 - 4:30 p.m.: MSU Campus Field Trip
      • Participants will be contacted via email with options and select their Field Trip choice prior to the start of the Institute
    • 5:30 p.m.: Dinner at South Pointe Cafeteria (Case Hall)
    • 7:30 p.m.: (tentatively - official game time TBD) - MSU Men's Hockey Team VS University of Minnesota (Munn Ice Arena)
    • 10 p.m.: Return to Hotel
    • 11 p.m.: Chaperone checks and lights out
  •  Sunday, December 4
    • 7 - 8 a.m.: Continental breakfast (Spring Hill Suites Hotel)
    • 8 - 9 a.m.: Check out of hotel and transportation to Wells Hall
    • 9 - 10:15 a.m.: Full Group Activity (Wells Hall)
    • 10:30 - 11:30 a.m.: Youth Leadership Panel Presentation 
    • 12 - 12:45 p.m.: Lunch at South Pointe Cafeteria (Case Hall)
    • 1 - 1:30 p.m.: Participant Pick-Up at Wells Hall

On-site check-in for participants attending the SYLI at our Belleville, Detroit, and Vicksburg venues will be held from 9:30 - 10 a.m. on Dec. 3, 2022, at the following locations:

Youth who register for the Institute but do complete their enrollment in 4-HOnline by Nov. 17, 2022, will have their registrations cancelled and may be subject to cancellation fees.

Persons canceling after Nov. 17, 2022, will be charged a cancellation fee:

  • East Lansing registrants: $60.00
  • Belleville, Detroit, & Vicksburg registrant: $10.00

Persons who do not cancel in advance and who do not show up at the workshop will be charged the full registration fee.
