4-H Coding Weekend Workshop

Students will spend four days (2 weekends) learning how to code and develop a personal website. MSU Extension is partnering with CodeNow and Code Nation, leaders in computer coding instruction for high school students, to provide the course content. 

The 4-H Coding Weekend Workshop will help you discover your passion for technology and enable you to continue practicing throughout high school. This course includes 4-days (2 weekends) of virtual instruction to hone your coding skills. Whether you have prior computer coding knowledge, or have never even thought about it, you will gain valuable coding experience and skills. By the end of the workshop, you will learn to develop with your own tech ideas; design and code a website from scratch!  Specific coding languages taught during the program include HTML, CSS, JS, Ruby, Rails, and Github.

Dates: Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11; Saturday, May 22 and Sunday, May 23, 2021; start 9 a.m. and wrap up by 3 p.m. each day.

Location: Virtually via Zoom

Cost: $150 per participant due to a generous grant from the Michigan 4-H Foundation.
Rates include tech support and program fees. There is a $100 cancellation fee for any cancellations on or after April 7, 2021.

Materials Required: Computer with internet and the ability to do video conferencing (microphone and webcam).

Target Audience:
High school freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors with an interest in learning computer coding and applying it to solve problems. Students will need their own laptop, email address, and internet for use during the course. 

Instructors: Our instructors are also practitioners. They know what works and what does not work in the real world. They’re constantly pushing to keep their knowledge on the cutting edge of what’s new and exciting.

All participants MUST complete their registration as members of Michigan 4-H for the 2020/2021 4-H program year, which began on Sept. 1, 2020. Returning 4-H members can reenroll in Michigan 4-H, and new 4-H members can register for the first time by going to https://v2.4honline.com/

The zoom link will be emailed to participants that complete the registration, payment is paid in full, and 4-H Online enrollment process by April 7, 2021 (Club is listed under Livingston County – 4-H Coding Weekend Workshop Statewide).

Sample Daily Schedule*

8:55 a.m.: Login to virtual workshop

9:00 a.m.: Coding begins! Virtual whole group instruction and team building. 

12:00 p.m.: Lunch at home

1:00 p.m.: Whole group check-in/touch base 

1:30 to 3:00 p.m.: Continue whole group instruction

3:00 p.m.: Daily wrap-up & evaluation (on last day)

Virtual contact hours: approximately 5 hours per day of virtual instruction (approximately 20 instructional hours total), and a self-determined amount of work outside of the schedule.

*Daily schedule will allow for multiple mini-breaks throughout the day and may be subject to change based on need.
