The Department of Entomology at Michigan State University is excited to announce the Excellence in Insect Science Symposium 2024. This 2-day event will connect entomology faculty with industry, government, and other partners, building a community of entomologists focused on the symposium theme of: Leveraging Insect Science for Global Grand Challenges. Sessions center on One Health, Climate Resilience, and STEM Education. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn from leading scientists and experts, network with fellow entomologists, and develop new teams and collaborations to address global grand challenges.

Symposium Pricing
Early Bird (Available until February 18th): $120

Regular (Begins February 19th): $175
Early Bird Student (Available until February 18th): $45
Student (Begins February 19th): $60

Room Block
A room block is available at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center, 219 S Harrison Rd., East Lansing, MI 48824 with lodging available for $128 per night. The deadline to secure your room is April 19, 2024. The information needed to book a hotel room will be within your registration confirmation email.


Abstract Submissions

A poster session and reception will take place on May 16, 2024. The session is open to students, postdocs, and early career professionals. Those interested in presenting a poster during the poster social may submit an abstract for review below. Abstracts must be submitted by Feb. 16, 2024. Notification of abstract acceptances will be sent in February. Posters must select one of the three focus areas - One Health, Climate Resilience, or STEM Education.

Symposium Cancellation Policy
All sympossium cancellations prior to May 1, 2024, will be refunded in full. Cancellations received on or after May 1, 2024 will not be refunded.

Public Offerings
All programs listed below are open to symposium attendees and the public. Please register if you plan to attend any of the four options.

Jennifer Angus is a visual artist and EIS speaker for the "Science Communication and Outreach" panel. Her exhibit entitled "Flying Jewels & Other Lofty Insects" is at Frederik Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, Michigan until August 18, 2024. EIS will be offering complimentary transportation to and from the Meijer Gardens on Wednesday, May 15, 2024. The shuttle will depart from the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center Front Lobby at 1 p.m. and will return by 5 p.m. Admission ticket costs will be the responsibility of the participant upon arrival to Meijer Gardens. Admission rates can be found on the 'Plan A Visit' page of the Meijer Gardens website. Please register to reserve your seat on the shuttle.


The insect-themed movie night will be on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center. The movie will begin at 7:30 p.m. and the selected film will be announced soon. Your 'movie ticket' includes refreshments that will be available throughout the showing. Movie tickets are $10 and will also be available for purchase at the event. Movie Night cancellations prior to May 10, 2024, will be refunded in full. Cancellations received on or after May 10, will not be refunded. 

The MSU Department of Entomology will be hosting an outreach event at the MSU Bug House, 288 Farm Ln, East Lansing, MI 48824, and will include the visiting Ohio State University Bug Mobile after the symposium concludes on Friday, May 17, 2024, from 3-5 p.m. The event will provide hands on encounters to acquaint participants with a variety of insects. Insect ice cream (and other assorted flavors) will be available. 

Joseph Yoon, an Edible Insect Ambassador, world renowned chef and thought leader in entomophagy (or eating insects) will be hosting a public lecture at the MSU Museum's Food Fight exhibit, 409 W Circle Dr, East Lansing, MI 48823, on Saturday, May 18, 2024, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
