Nature enthusiasts will have the opportunity to learn about Upland Prairie Natives from Hudsonville Nature Center Naturalist Craig Elston. Class will begin at the City of Hudsonville Community room for a period of lecture including the historical scope and range of the original North American and Michigan prairies as compared to today. Discussion will include what a prairie is and what are the components, inhabitants and their interactions as part of prairie ecology. This course will also cover the planting and construction of a prairie planting and its maintenance. Participants will then have a short drive over to the Hudsonville Nature Center. The outdoor lab portion of the session will explore a 6 acre restored tall grass prairie, identifying and discussing both flowering plants and grasses while walking through the prairie for an up-close and personal look. Long pants and closed toe shoes are a must for this session.
