Introduction to Urban Planning - Global Perspective

This 7-week online introductory course offers a comprehensive exploration of Urban Planning (UP), covering its origins and foundational concepts not only within the US, but at a global level. Specific focus will be on Indian Cities, but we will explore each facet of UP using a global lens. 

Students will leave the course with a complete understanding of how UP affects every facet of our lives, from transportation, to the environment, and finally our health and well-being. Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from the School of Planning, Design & Construction (SPDC) at Michigan State University (MSU).

Course Outline

This 7-week online, asynchronous course will cover a range of topics designed to introduce you to the fundamental concepts and practices of Urban and Regional Planning, with a global perspective and a special focus on Indian cities. The following topics outline the core components of the course:

  1. Evolution of Cities: Explore the historical growth of urban centers and how cities have transformed over time.
  2. History of Planning: Study the origins and development of planning as a discipline.
  3. Legal and Theoretical Basis for Planning: Understand the legal frameworks and theoretical underpinnings that guide the planning process.
  4. Comprehensive Planning: Delve into the process of developing master plans and the strategies for their implementation.
  5. Tools for Land Use Planning: Learn about the various tools and techniques used to manage and guide land use.
  6. Urban Design: Examine the principles of designing functional and aesthetically pleasing urban spaces.
  7. Sustainable Development: Focus on approaches that balance urban growth with environmental sustainability.
  8. Growth Management: Discuss strategies to control and direct urban expansion.
  9. Transportation Planning: Look into how transportation systems are integrated into urban planning.
  10. Economic Development: Understand the interplay between urban planning and economic growth.
  11. Environmental and Energy Planning: Study the planning processes that address environmental sustainability and energy use.

Cancellation Policy: No refunds will be given on or after June 23, 2025. However, registrations may be transferred to another individual.
